How to Make a PWM Lamp Dimmer Using NE555

A simple and efficient PWM lamp dimmer using timer IC NE555 is discussed in this article. Yesterdays linear regulator based dimmers can only attain a maximum efficiency  of 50% and are far inferior when compared to the PWM based dimmers which can hit well over 90% efficiency. Since less amount of power is wasted as heat, the switching elements of PWM dimmers require a smaller heat sink and this saves a lot of size and weight. In simple words, the most outstanding features of the PWM based lamp dimmers are high efficiency and low physical size. The circuit diagram of a 12V PWM lamp dimmer is shown below. We recommend 3 very good books to learn the basics and applications of the 555 timer IC. These books have been thoroughly reviewed and they can be purchased by clicking on this link:- 3 Great Books to Learn 555 Timer Circuits and Projects Fig 1 : PWM lamp dimmer using NE555 As you can see, NE555 timer IC which is wired as an astable multivibrator operating at 2.8KHz forms the heart ...

DC motor control circuit using NE555

A simple DC motor controller circuit using NE555 is shown here. Many DC motor speed control circuits have been published here but this is the first one using NE555 timer IC. In addition to controlling the motors speed its direction of rotation can be also changed using this circuit. A PWM circuit based on timer NE555 is the heart of this circuit. NE555 is wired as an astable multivibrator whose duty cycle can be adjusted by varying the POT R1. The output of IC1 is coupled to the base of transistor Q1 which drives the motor according to the PWM signal available at its base. Higher the duty cycle the average voltage across motor will be high which results in higher motor speed and vice versa. Change of DC motor direction is attained using the DPDT switch S1 which on application just toggles the polarity applied to the motor. The circuit can be assembled on a Vero board or PCB. Use 12V DC for powering the IC. Vm is the power supply for motor and its value depends on the motors voltage rat...

Fire Alarm using NE555 and temperature sensor

This is a simple series of fire alarms. In this series used NE555 timer and temperature sensor to detect high temperatures. The working principle of this temperature sensor that is when the temperature is high around the sensor then there is resistance on the sensor to be small.  However if the low temperature then the resistance will be high. If the resistance of small sensors, the voltage supply will be able to flow past the sensor and activate the transistor. IC1 NE555 as a regulator of the audio frequency. Transistors 1 and 2 are used as a driver IC1. Output (pin 3) of IC1 would trigger a transistor base T3 (SL100), which drives the speaker to produce sound the alarm. Frequency NE555 depending on resistance values of R5 and R6 and the capacitance sensor C2 temperature. When the temperature gets hot, would provide a low resistance so that supply voltage can flow into the base of transistor T1 through a diode D1 and R2. Capacito...
